Tank car leaks
Railroad tank cars reported 363 non-accidental releases in 2019, often caused by improperly secured valves or defective components. UTLX sought to tackle this recurring safety issue by reimagining manway cover designs.

Innovative design in action
UTLX’s engineers leveraged finite element analysis (FEA) to create the 3-Bolt Manway Cover, featuring fewer bolts, a simplified torque pattern, and a first-of-its-kind seal that uses tank pressure for enhanced safety.

Collaborative engineering
Partnering with Trelleborg, UTLX designed a spring-energized elastomer seal, inspired by pressure cooker technology, to minimize leaks and ensure a tight seal under pressure.

Testing and regulatory approval
The cover underwent rigorous testing, including 1.25× regulatory pressurization standards, successfully proving its effectiveness for trial use over two years.

Future potential
With plans for full implementation on 100,000 tank cars by 2024, the 3-Bolt Manway Cover is set to minimize NARs, increasing safety, efficiency, and savings industry-wide.
